I was attracted to this book because in mentions two of my favorites from my home town area: the tenor great, Hattish Alexander and bass phenom, Gerald Cannon.  I had the pleasure of playing with them on this podcast.  Click on the "read more" link below to see and read the book.

Our first session in the fall of 2008 saw a fine turn out.  We introduced one another, talked about the workshop philosophy, and played a blues that I'd penned on the way to the workshop.  I call it "JAS Blues".  We talked about some basic principals that I tried to illustrate within the composition, including:

• repetition
• use of space
• short notes and long notes
• articulation
